Choosing the right domain name for your business
Your domain name is your address online. It appears on your website, your email and your marketing, so it is worth a few minutes’ thought before you buy one.
Keep it short and easy to say
The best domain names are easy to remember, easy to spell and easy to say over the phone. Avoid hyphens and unusual spellings if you can, because people will get them wrong.
Pick the right ending
- .co.uk tells people you are a UK business and is a strong choice for local customers.
- .com is recognised everywhere and suits businesses that sell further afield.
- .ie is worth considering if you trade in the Republic of Ireland.
Many businesses register both the .co.uk and the .com, so nobody else can take the other one.
Use it for your email too
An email address at your own domain, such as hello@yourbusiness.co.uk, looks far more professional than a free email account, and it stays yours if you change provider.
Keep it in your name and keep it renewed
Make sure the domain is registered to your business, not to a former web designer or employee. Keep auto-renewal switched on and your contact details up to date, so you never lose it by accident.
Search for yours
You can check whether the name you want is available using the domain search at the top of this site. If you would like a hand choosing, email hello@bluemonkee.com.
